This award recognizes excellence in a recording released during the eligibility period by an artist/group whose music falls into the contemporary or classic R&B, or Soul genre.
R&B spans two distinct styles: Contemporary R&B, known for its smooth, sensuous vocals, synthesizers, and modern themes; and Classic R&B, distinguished by soulful vocals, brass sections, and roots in blues and gospel. Soul music, whether traditional or contemporary, emphasizes deep emotional expression, gospel-inspired vocals, and a connection to social issues. Traditional Soul adds lush orchestration and gospel choir-like background vocals to themes of love, heartache, and social justice. Contemporary Soul retains the soulful core while embracing elements from various musical styles, including electronic instrumentation.
Singles, EPs, and albums are eligible for this award.
